Smallzy90's RB 182 Cup Track Project

Hello Guys

Recently got myself a RB 182 Cup with the views of turning it into a bit of track day fun.

I'm new to track days, after coming from the world drifting with my Nissan 200SX S14, I fancied something a bit different to get stuck into.

I bought the car knowing it needed the dephaser doing, which wasn't a problem as it was a good price for a clean little car.
The car itself has very very few marks on it for a 12 year old car, which was nice to see.
The tyres were not brilliant, although this didn't matter as I'm not keeping these wheels.
Both rear exhaust section mounts are broken and held with cable ties.
It also had the ABS/TCS and EML light on, just sensors eh?

I fell in love with the colour, I have always like Racing Blue. It was a good price for a standard car.

After a couple of months of it sitting on the driveway/lawn, I thought I'd better start making some progress with it.
This kick up the back side came when my friend and I booked a Cadwell novice day on 19th May. So that now gives me a deadline to get the car safe and some upgrades done.

I have bought full genuine cambelt kit, dephaser, water pump etc with aux kit.
I have also bought:
Brembo HC front discs
Carbon Lorraine front pads
Brembo rear pads
HEL brake lines all round
Oil service kit
Whiteline rear ARB

The car will also get a brake fluid change, coolant change and gearbox oil change. Then it'll be MOT'd.

Wheels and tyres will be bought once I know everything is safe and tip top with the car.
I'll be going for:
15" Pro race 1.2 in black
195 50 15 Yoko AD08R's

So the car was dropped off at my partners work, where the cambelt and dephaser etc, will be carried out, including MOT etc.

A lot of people strictly say the car must go to a specialist for the cambelt, which I can understand in some ways.
My guy has done a fair few 1*2's now, and all have been perfect ( including his boss' 182 track car ) so I'm happy for him to do mine. He has the knowledge of doing them and the tools required. He wants just £100 to do it too, which makes it a no brainer for me.

When I dropped the car off, he said he would have a quick look under the car before he went home...
I got a text from him that said:

" well at least the rear springs aren't broken, everything else is no good "

Immediately I thought he's got to be playing around with me, until I got an essay of things wrong.
Bearing in mine, this was a ' quick look ' before he left work..

- Both front springs broken - not too much of a problem, I'll buy some lowering springs for now, coilovers in the future
- OSF CV gaiter split - hopefully a case of just a replacement
- OSF wheel bearing looks as if it's been taken apart previously - hopefully I can just replace this
- NSF ABS ring snapped - hopefully explains the ABS/TCS light, new ring
- OSF ABS ring doesn't match NSF - is this normal? Just a case of new ring again?
- Gearbox leaking of NS driveshaft - hopefully a case of a seal perhaps?
- PAS fluid leaking from pipe where rubbed through on heat shield - new pipe once identified
- Top Radiator mounts broken - hopefully new mounts, or I'll just get a rad
- Air on system very poor - I'll keep it all for now, but ditch it later with correct delete kit
- NSR calliper seized - usually I'm one to strip and rebuild callipers, but in this case I'll just replace.
- Whole exhaust system rotten and blowing in places - new exhaust time, unsure what to go for yet, I don't want anything loud and as close to factory sound really.
- O2 sensor pre cat not reading correctly - hopefully explains the EML light on but could be due to poor exhaust system , although car runs fine.

As you can see, this is quite a list of things to get sorted that I wasn't expecting.

Any advice or help on sourcing parts would be excellent and really appreciated.

I'm off to the Garage today to have a proper look over the car, in some ways I hope I don't find anything else, but in other ways I'd rather find any future potential issues and get them sorted.

Thanks for reading, and I'll keep you posted on my progress :)

Looks a great example in the photos and nice and original, but that's a bummer about all the issues!! But mint RB's command a decent price so if you got it reasonably cheap, could still be a good buy :up: Nice to see another in Norfolk too! There's a few of us about.

With the exhaust, I have a Milltek cat-back on mine which was around £480 but is nice and quiet and the fit was great. Also put in some Powerflex (red) exhaust hanger bushes too as the factory ones are a bit pants. If you want springs, get Cooksports in my own opinion which I also have and the ride is very good, not too harsh.

P.S. that Lexus looks cool as f*** lol!

Thanks man! It's pretty clean, I'm more than happy with it :)
I'm in Kings Lynn, I haven't seen any about here. Hopefully I will see more when it's on the road.
After having a loud shouty Nissan keeping the noise down is big priority, so I'll look into the miltek :) cheers!
Exhaust mounts I've heard the way to go is poly, as the standard ones can last a matter of weeks haha
In regards to springs, it's either going to be cooksports or the eibach sportlines, unsure which as of yet..
Haha thanks, The Lexus is my big comfort VIP bus ha I do love it :)

Knew you were on cs.net! I replied to you on facebook mate. Car looks good! Fairly easy fixes really.
The abs rings will definitely be causing your dashlight headaches

This is my old Clio, sold it 3-4 years ago, it was absolutely mint and very well looked after when I had it, what a shame 😞

So... my guy has just finished the cambelt and dephaser replacement...

Timing is 100% spot on, but there is still a horrible horrible noise coming from the engine.
I'd been told it was the dephaser that was making the noise. But my guy seems to think it's top end, said it sounded like piston slap :( looks like a replacement engine is needed :(

Google injector noise, sounds like it's more than that of you've sourced an engine mate
Yeah it's definitely not that, it like a nasty scratchy knocking noise. My mechanic said it sounded like piston slap...
I've found an engine that's had belts and dephaser and aux done last September, with proof, and was put on dyno afterwards,
It's also still in the car so I can hear it running before I remove it.
£250... bargain!

I hope so too man... the cheap Clio project is no longer cheap.. ha it'll hopefully all be worth it and good for Cadwell on the 19th May...

It'll be worth it in the end. As said well looked after RB Clio's do command good money.

Stick with it.

Hello guys,

I have a full cambelt kit, dephaser, water pump and aux kit for sale.. ( all genuine Renault parts bought from Renault parts direct 1 week ago )

I had these fitted on my car Saturday and unfortunately the noise from my engine was not the dephaser :(

These have been fitted 24hours with only 10 minutes running time maximum

I understand that the cambelt will probably not be used again, but everything else is brand new almost.

This lot cost me £345.

Any offers?

Cheap change for someone

So today plumbed the engine all back in and fired it up...
It was great to hear the F4R engine as it should be.

With only a few jobs left to do now, it's certainly getting closer to MOT time..

Just the front wheel bearing to get sorted now when it arrives.

I also got around to fitting the Eibach sportline springs I bought a few days ago, a noticeable height difference already, and I can only assume it'll settle a little when driven.

A good day today!

You're not hanging about are you!! Great work, good to hear its all coming together now
Thanks Steve, It's getting there now ha
This weekend was supposed to be a nice chilled one for me ( due to working all weekend next weekend )
But instead I was taking engines in and out haha

I'm glad I'm back on track though

I would be interested to buy your old cylinder head even if there are problems with the valves.everything that interests me is that camshaft bearind to be in good condition

You will have to forgive me I'm new to the forum! I actually saw Smallz car in his drive way not long ago and thought.....yeah, got to have one!!

I’ve been a little lapse with uploading my progress on here!

Just a quick one to whoever sees this reply, are my pictures still up and can be viewed? As I used photobucket and I know since I posted they have changed their sharing policy’s and I don’t think third party can see then,

Cheers

Chris

Yes photos are showing, I was the same with photobucket, I lost pages and pages of photos on my thread. Then they realised their epic fail and sorted it out and now working again.

Ahhh that’s good then, I know the M3cutters forum is still ruined from changes photobucket made! That hasn’t been sorted unfortunately!

I’ll be updating my thread soon then hopefully :) hope all is well Steve
