Adam's budget racing thread

  WRX
Thought that I would start something off, to hopefully assist anybody else looking at entering this series if all goes ahead for 2014.
I have always been very keen on motor racing, as my late Father did various circuit racing, hillclimbing and sprinting, so I grew up on racetracks. So it feels nice to follow in his footsteps, just would have been nice to have him around to help but still.

Having bought the car last year, as a daily runner and a bit of fun, my first port of call was good ol' Fred at BTM Performance. Full credit to him, as his recommendations have worked very well for me this far and I hope that he will be instrumental in the further development of the car. He gave it a good look over, pointing out a couple of minor things that needed addressing but it was decided that I'd bought a pretty good example.

Within a few weeks, the necessary track bits started to be added, the intention was to keep it as comfortable as possible but ensuring that it was capable enough out on track. The modifications to date consist of Brembo HC discs, Ferodo DS2500 565H pads, ATE Blue brake fluid, a Whiteline ARB, Cup shocks and Eibach Sportline springs. The necessary cambelt, aux and dephaser have also been done this year as well as new wheel bearings, ball joints etc.
It was always my intention to do track days but to simply arrive and drive, with my road tyres, as to be quite honest I couldn't be bothered to mess about changing wheels over.

How it looked at Mallory a few months ago:

However, even though I was happy with how it went on track shod in Pirelli PZero Neros, the bug bit a bit harder and I decided to buy two sets of wheels and tyres. These being TD Pro Race 1.2s with Federal 595 RSRs in 205/50 15 for dry track use and some Lensos with 195/50 15 Toyo R1Rs for normal road and wet track times.

How she looks now on the 1.2s:

So now Tony has set the ball rolling for what will hopefully turn into reality. Fortunately with the modifications already on the car, I haven't got as much to spend as others may have. Having said that I need the necessary electrical cutoffs and a fire extinguisher. As well as the roll cage, seat and harness so the shopping list is still quite expensive. I also need a race suit and compliant gloves, boots etc. Most importantly I still need a race licence but I will get that in order as soon as the series is confirmed and will buy it so all the paperwork covers a whole season.

Before I get any further, I want to post some links for both myself and others to be aware of. Please feel free to add any other sites that may help.
I don't wish to say which sites are good or bad, I will leave that for people to find out. I just wish to put them here for info and other member's use.

Firstly what I consider to be a great site for anyone just looking, for information on getting started in any form of motorsport:

Motor Sports Association:

MSA Blue book for general regulations (series specific obviously not yet available)

Well that's all for now but I will update with any further work, as and when it happens.

Thanks for the links mate I plan on racing next year not sure what to enter. If this new clio series is cheaper than the others and has lower entry fees I'm up for it :)

Well if this year's anything to go by, I believe it's £300 race entry which is pretty reasonable and obviously initial setup costs are low, as we don't have to splash out to get the car competitive, as they should all be much of a muchness Josh. Win win all round.

Yes that does sound reasonable Adam. Unfortunately for me the costs are very important on my budget lol. Reading the other thread about this it sounds really good and I hope it goes ahead I will hopefully be entering if it does :)

Transponder

You will want to shop around for one tho. Id go for the 12v wired one, put a saved search on ebay for one, they will come up in the off season. We got ours '2nd hand' but was new in the box. Dont be tempted by the cheaper motoX or karting models, they might not count properly at speed

Thanks Jay, looking on TSL's site, they now do a subscription based one, which would minimise the outlay, compared to buying a new one. Don't know yours and Tony's thoughts on these.

If you wait till the off season and go along to GPR you will get some nice suit for a lot less. I paid less than that for my 2 colour one

If you own one its fit and forget. No hasstle of going along to the time keepers to collect it at the meetings. Litteraly we fitted ours 4 years ago and havent touched it since. Its still worth about what we paid for it

Kind of input, I was hoping for thanks guys. Saving us all time and money, making it safer etc. The Burpspeed seat is nice and holds you in well, was going to ask Tony what it is.

If we've got to have a full working dash in the regs, are there not cheaper cage options without a screen bar? I'd rather buy a cheaper cage and add bars in other areas.
Cheapest I could find in a pretty quick search mate. Love to see any alternatives.

Yes always wait until the winter for s suit. The new models come out, so the old ones are much cheaper.

  Cup In bits
Dash dodger cages like burpspeed's ( i think your first linked one is) would be better for this type of thing, Saves moving the fuse box, UHC (whatevre its called) and so on.

  Cup In bits
The picture is only for 'illustration purposes' so might not be correct but dash dodgers make life so much easier without the need for removing the dash support brackets, cutting holes, adjusting wiring.

On the other hand a good cage in this series could be a legal advantage over the next competitor.

  Cup In bits
There's no question of it not being right (to MSA standard's) but you could have a 8 point cage like mine for that weight Sonny and rough price which would stiffen the chassis and give an edge. It's not what most are interested in it seems with this championship though, that will change IMO when things get going and everyone will be looking to one up the next guy.

Just had confirmation from TSL, that you can have one of their Transponders on a two year subsciption deal for £168 all inc.

  WRX
That's what I though Tony, then you just renew the subsciption fee with mylaps after the two years if req.
