    Lambda probe

Have you still got the cat in place? Does the 172 have 2 lambda probes like the 182? If so which probe was faulty? I suspect the pre-cat (1st) probe as thats the main one. If faulty then the fueling could be all wrong and, either way, you may have damaged the cat. Check it out at an MOT...

    another 182 crashed!

Looks like you didnt get the cup suspension, perhaps if you had youd have stopped in time?;) I assume the ABS worked hard to lessen the impact but was it minor enough that the airbags didnt go off? (Looks like the cavalier didnt have cup suspension either!)

    How to tell an import

Surely it says on the DVLA log book? Insurance companies often ask if its an import, if it doesnt say on the DVLA then how would anyone know? Also imports tend to be pre-reg so see if the 1st owner had it for less than 3 months, thats if the car hasnt had 3 or more owners!

    182 performance

Its surprising how much a louder exhaust note makes to the feeling of acceleration. Perhaps that contributes?

    another 182 crashed!

Looks like the 1 thing youd think would break 1st was the only thing to survive! That black pointy thing, you know, the proximity detectors for the anti-crash ESP system. Surprised they didnt detect the car pulling out and apply the brakes and steer around. Maybe theres a limit to what they...

    182 colors

Oh yes, theyve changed Paddock Green to Petrol blue. Has the colour changed or just the name? (it must be a different colour, surely?) So anyone that has a Paddock Green 182 has a VERY unusual colour as theyve stopped doing it now! So now theres 3 blues to choose from, popular colour!
  7. Q

    182 colors

You have the first 5 colours correct but the last one is wrong, I think. Its not Petrol blue, its paddock green.
  8. Q

    performance stats

Yes, quite interesting. I wonder where they got all those figures? Theyre not the manufacturerers! Renault claim 7.1 seconds to 62 for the 182 but everyone tests it faster!

    Rain sensitive wipers...

Geoff_172, do you mean the auto lights? Why not switch them off? With the key in + engine off, switch sidelights on and off twice quickly (Youll hear a beep). If that was your only gripe then now your cars perfect!

    yellow 182

All the 182 owners Ive seen are caucasian, Havent spotted any Chinese 182 owners.

What are the common faults on a 182

Look at top gears web site. They have a section where readers tell of their reliability issues. The Renaults dont do too badly but the HCTypeR has many faults (been around longer, I suppose). Id be surprised if theres much difference in reliability between all hot hatches in this price range...
  12. Q

Right, give me a good reason to buy a 182

You could choose the 182 over the HtypeR on pure performance. Although it has less power, the power is more useable and comes in at lower rpm. It also has less weight meaning the power/weight is about the same but the braking + cornering can be a little sharper and the smaller size leaves more...

Bad driver scratched my bumper :-(

Im confused?!? Which kerb would you have hit? The one on the left that had a lane of traffic between you + it, or the one on the right that was on the wrong side of the road? Annoying though even with so little damage. Can I assume u have a met black 172? Unfortunately youll see every little...

    Thieving c**ts!!

Just in the short term, Go to renault and get your alarm + immobiliser re-progged for just your remaining key. It wont stop him getting in but he cant drive it and he wont be able to switch off the alarm. I suspect that Renault wont charge much, if at all, for that.

Help please.. think iv been flashed agen

If you knew the Fiesta was trying to race you, had you been travelling together for some distance? If so then it seems you were winning. So if you are close to being banned, why are you racing other cars, speeding (hard to race within the limits) and blasting through lights as they change...

swapping front tyres for back - why not

edde, of course you should not choose tyres with less grip should others with more grip be available but, given a only 1 set of 4 and 2 have less grip, then for safety for average drivers you may be right. But for experienced drivers wanting the best lap time then the best tyres should go on...
  17. Q

swapping front tyres for back - why not

Dont confuse depth of tread with grip. In the dry, usually the less depth of tread then the greater the grip. The opposite when its wet. Maybe you just need competition front tyres for your track day (leave the rears as standard)?

i pulled something on my engine

Why do you have to know? Cant you just clip it back on?
  19. Q

i pulled something on my engine

Are you sure its a wire? If whistling sound heard probably a feed of the manifold pressure (like vacuum advance for ignition) for something. So more likely a pipe rather than wire. If so vacuum advance? Servo brakes? Sensor for ECU? Oil breather?

    Running in my 182!

I wouldnt dare contradict someone with the name KNOWALL, except that how could someone who knows-all get suspended? Edde has explained very well "how you eliminate the vvt as a cause???". He believes the VVT is switched on above 1800 rpm if water above 80 and manifold pressure is over 800mbar...
  21. Q

    Running in my 182!

How would the ECU know the VVT isnt activating? I know theres 2 sensors, pre + post cat, but they only check Lambda, dont they? I dont think the ECU knows where the cams are timed.
  22. Q

    Running in my 182!

edde, fair enough but we agree that VVT is either on or off (ie its not variable or multi stage). But you say its switched on above 1800 rpm if water above 80 and manifold pressure is over 800mbar? So if a 182 is driven with the VVT disconnected, you say it will still have a power surge at...
  23. Q

    Running in my 182!

As I understand it, the VVT is switched on by the ECU opening an oil pressure valve to the VVT device that advances the inlet cam. As I understand it, the ECU switches this valve at about 5,000 rpm (ie its not variable or multi stage - its on or off) Is this true? If so any 182 owner could...
  24. Q

    Running in my 182!

Is it pure coincidence? On Renaults with VVT there is a device which switches oil pressure when the engine reaches about 5,000 rpm and this advances the inlet valve timing. On Renaults with VVT there is also an increase in power at about 5,000 rpm. Neither of these are true for non-VVT...

    ESP

Im surprised everyone is noticing a little light on the dash when the car seems to be trying to prevent a crash! ;) Cant you feel the brakes are active without you pressing and the throttle not giving what you request?
  26. Q

    Taken to the limit

Looks like not too many 182 drivers get to the limit very often, see the "ESP?" thread; http://forum.cliosport.net/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=2&TopicID=96806&PagePosition=1http://forum.cliosport.net/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=2&TopicID=96806&PagePosition=1
  27. Q

182 Cat bypass pipe, are they available

Pete_172, thats interesting but it must do something! If the pre-cat sensor is the main one then I suppose the post-cat one is just to confirm the cat is ok and make alterations to the engine if not? But if its just disconnected Id have thought the ECU would think the cats in a bad way and do...

182 cup suspension; have U really got it

Yes, good plan for anyone with a 182. It does show that anyone who needs parts for the 182 in later years has to be very careful they get the right parts (especially 2nd owners etc). eg after crash if new drivers front hub and rear caliper are replaced, have U remember to specify cup option as...
  29. Q

    Running in my 182!

After a bit more research Im not quite right, Renault dont use "low-rpm rocker arms". With Renaults VVT the exhaust timing, duration and lift always remain constant as per non-VVT. The inlet duration and lift also always remain constant as per non-VVT. Its only the inlet timing that is...

182 Cat bypass pipe, are they available

rmccardal, thanks for the PM - red the thread (from http://www.pro-speed.bizwww.pro-speed.biz). So I take it you initially had a straight pipe inserted where the cat was? What did they do with the after-cat sensor? Did they make a fitment so that it just reads the gasses without the cat, did...
