New member - looking at a 172...

  Fiesta st 190
Hi guys!

I'm currently looking at buying a clio 172 as a daily. Going to be spending around £1,000-£1,300. Does anyone have one or know of anyone selling one? Ideally a cup.

Is there anything i need to look for when buying one? Common knocks, groans or bangs? Any rust issues etc? Or just general common problems?

I will be having a few mods? I want the k-tec stealth exhaust & few other bits, wheres best to buy from? And what mods are best?

Also, what are they like to live with? Im currently 20 and drive a caged, mk6 fiesta st track car, running 200bhp with a huuuuuge spec... using it as a daily is taking its tole now.

Any advice or anything is very welcome!

Jack!

You can get lucky and find one for £1500-2000 in good shape and not needing belts..

At 1000-1400, you'll be looking at belts and a few problems and that'll cost the difference..

Every rattles on about the belts, but it's a deal breaker, they're around £500-600 mark and because you'll need the tools for a DIY, it doesn't stop the initial outlay..

Clios an awesome daily.. Buy one.

Really? Been looking at a cup for £1300 says its had belts and what not done recently? How often do they need doing? And is there a way to tell if they actually have been done? & yeah, i want one! My dad bought a 182 for cheaaaaap and he loves it! I want a 172 cause i prefer the styling of them

Just because it said the belts have been done, dont take their word for it. You would need to see a reciept and that would have to be from a specialist or main dealer, with dephaper and pulleys etc

Billy big bollcks down the local garge will have most likey done it wrong, and its only a matter of time until your engine is scrap or needs an expensive rebuild.

Get one that hasnt had the belts done for cheap, and take it to a specialist on here straight away, spend £500 and know that its been done correct.

If you see one, put the link up and we can look at it for you.

I disagree.

There are good examples available for not a lot of money. They're knocking on 15 years old now!

TBH, on a sub £1500 car, i wouldn't even worry about the belts. Eff spending almost half the value of the car getting them done. Run it until it goes bang. buy a second hand engine for £250. Whack that in. Sorted.

At the mo mine owes me £1200, thats with belts, water pump, dephaser etc done. Realistically i think i'd get £1495 for it.

Good car tbf so wont be selling it just yet.

Been looking at a couple ph1's for sub 1k. I dont mind buying cheap & then getting andy to change belts etc.

Obviously i'd ask for receipts etc, i wouldnt just buy willy nilly. It wont let me copy links into here :(

Is there a way of telling if they're good or on theyre way out?

Just been qouted £1600 to insure a 172. Must be having a laugh!!

They do want the earth to cover one.. I insured a 30k+ porker for £360 f/c and everyone else was getting quotes of around £450 for a £2000 Clio 182.. Chuckle..

There's some insurers on here somewhere that do fair prices, but I haven't needed them..

They are smaller than the ph2. Last of the cable throttle. Parts are getting harder to get but looks cooler than ph2's. I did do a comparison (all in my experience and opinion) in my thread. Click the link under my avatar.

Seems quite honest and with a bit of money it could be a decent little car. Just depends on how far you want to make it clean...

Im on the mobile site, so do i just go onto your profile? Everything i pretty much want to do, has been done, exhaust etc. Just would map it and maybe a bigger t/b. Also would maybe look into coilovers but would it handle well on springs?

I'd get the dents sorted out at my dads work easy enough. Any paintwork would be the same, judt refurb the wheels too. As for the interior, new steering wheel and gearknob would do me.

I'm not after a work beater or a beauty, just a nippy tidy daily!

It already has an induction kit and ktr stealh cat back. I'd go for a decat, better induction kit and map. How much do ported inlets set me back? Will i get good gains? & yeah, hopefully he'll reply soon!

If you take the head off for work, would you refit all the old belts, pulleys, dephaser etc and risk the head??

If not it'll be £300-400 before you even get to the head..

Been offered a ph2 in black that needs its dephaser doing, all parts included but just needs doing, cars £750... scrape on the back quater, dent in the bonnet and bit of paint flake on the back bumper... good deal?

You can buy one in much better condition with belts done for £1.5k.

But if you can get the belts done cheap and bodywork done cheap then it might be worth a look.
