172 ph1 gearbox go bang!

  clio mk1
Right I swapped my mk1 ph2 clio Rt Auto for a 172 clio sport (bizarre swaps I know but hey). I have wanted a 172 ph1 for a while and this swap came up because the 172 has a blown gearbox ... bits on the floor and hole in casing blown! needless to say there is no forward or backward motion created by this gearbox!

I need to put in a new box and don't care too much if it's a 172 box or not, can I use the 1.2 gearbox or a megane box? or is this car limited to use of the 172 gearbox only?

Any help with gearbox codes and the like would be great as my local breakers all want a box code and what it comes out of before they will help!

You'll need a 172 gearbox. Other ones won't do the job.

Assuming it is a ph1 172, and not a ph2, you need to get a speedo drive box. It is a JC5 089 or a JC5 129 box you need.

If you get a ph2 (with the exception of early phase 2 boxes) box your speedo won't work. So make sure you get the right one!

When you do the box swap I'd recommend doing the clutch and other bits and bobs (release bearing) if they need doing aswell.

Fantastic guys, I didn't realise you had to use the 172 box (I now stand corrected). I'm hoping that there is no further damage than the internals flying out of the box ... but here's for hoping I guess!

Re the gearbox decco, you are literally just around the corner from me as I am only J30 M1 so I may go for that if one doesn't come up closer to home! presuming it's a good box with no crunchiness (people have told me that the 172 box is inherently weak)

I think its only weak if much more power or rpm than it was designed for is used, mines on 72000 miles, gets used properly (I don't sidestep the clutch with 6000 revs on the rev counter) and its sweet.

Put a 172 cup gearbox in, it has a better final drive which suits the car much more. The Ph1 box makes it feel a bit lazy in comparison.

So get a JC5 129 instead of the JC5 089. Both are speedo drive boxes and a straigh swap for one another.

Yes pal it is defo a good box . If your at junction 30 the gearbox is currently only at hackenthorpe so I'm the right side of sheffield for you aswell

Cub speaks the truth. Definitely consider doing this at the same time - it would be silly not to. Also, drop and change the gearbox oil on the replacement unit - unless of course decco says that it's recently been swapped out.

Sorry about not getting back in touch Decco! Looks like I may be breaking a ph1 172 very shortly, as I have managed to get a rear accident damaged with a great engine and box (79k) for not allot of pennies .... supposed to be getting it delivered on Sunday, so we shall see

and by the looks of it the previous owner had managed to throw the selector linkage out of the box (only thing I can think of the parts on the floor being when collected)! Also something else terminal has happened inside the box as there is no drive and when revved speedo is registering speed (unless you press the clutch) while having no forward motion! what the heck has happened to it??? Diff explosion I think???

  clio mk1
would that be repairable if the casing isn't badly damaged then?
will be saving it if thats the case .... if this car doesn't arrive tomorrow I will still need that box

Still trying to get this damn wreck recovered as of yet ... I will most likely have lots of cheap spares which should help some people here out I guess! we shall see

Gearbox being bought from decco ... I'm so glad I joined up here, Paid membership very soon me thinks .
Are there still plenty of bits around for the ph1 172 (like seats and panels)?

  clio mk1
Ah so a steering wheel and some ph1 172 seats should be easy then? currently got those stupid 182 perforated seats in the front (presume thats what they are as the airbag wiring is wrong on them) and my steering wheel is about dead with the airbag hanging out (not bolted in properly) ... although I'm told the wheel is same as standard clio???
