172 Clutch Replacement

  Clio 172
The clutch on my 172 mk2 failed yesterday and I need to have it replaced. I need to pay someone to do it as I don't have the skills or time.
Local garage is quoting me NZD $1400 for the kit and the work but they are using an aftermarket kit, local Renault deal will use authentic Renault part but want ~NZD $2000 for the job.

Any reasons not to use the aftermarket kit? or tips for young players?

Aftermarket as is what make. If its a valeo you've saved yourself $600 bucks.

Seems expensive though a dealer charging £1000 to change a clutch. At that price, I'd be learning and making the time. lol

f**k me. Fly me over and buy my beer for a week and I'll do it.

Should be 6 hours work max for a garage.

Clutch kit is £100 over here.

Thanks all for the reply - I didn't see all these responses so apologies for the late response. Really appreciate everyones input.
I ended up buying a genuine kit from Renault NZ (NZ$600 ~£290 - Renault Parts are expensive here!)
Unfortunately, now the garage is telling me it's not the clutch, it's the transmission thats failed. Hopefully Renault will take the clutch kit back given that I don't need it now.
Given that he said he thinks it's ~14hrs work to do the clutch replacement, I don't trust him to do any work.
Renault NZ are quoting me NZD $10,000 for a new transmission and I can't find a second hand one, so I don't think I'll be doing that...

Anyone from NZ on this forum able to suggest a decent mechanic in Hamilton or Auckland.
I suspect I'm going to have to scrap it :(
If so, I'm in the market for a new Clio...<open can of worms on which one to choose>

It might be worth seeing how much it would cost to ship a gearbox over from the UK?
I'd be fitting the new clutch kit along with a replacment box if that indeed is your issue.

Okay - thanks good tip. By the time I go to the effort of organising that and getting it shipped over, I might just end up getting a 200 shipped over ;)

Just had a quick look it would be around 160-200 to post a box depending on the exact weight.

  Clio 172
That's in pounds obviously.
Thanks CJM - appreciate that. So working on £200 for shipping, presumably it will be several hundred £ to buy the transmission, i'm up for several thousand NZ$, more than what I paid for the entire car. Might be time for an upgrade!
Anyone want me to sell me a 200? ;)

Gearbox here sells for £150. Clutch £110 or so.

So for £500, you could have all the parts required shipped.

It's also no where near a 14 hour job. One of the first jobs I did on a car was change the clutch. Seems daunting but really isn't as bad as you think. I'd find a friend of a friend to fit it if I were you and get the parts from the UK on a pallet.

Sounds like there's a market for supplying renault parts to aus

@Budgie & @CJM - would either of you be able to recommend someone who can ship me a replacement gearbox? I've given up looking for one locally and have concluded I need to import my own.

I can ship a box via work, and if it's a 130 box you're after (newer type without speedo drive) I've got one for sale.

Outstanding @CJM - Much appreciated. To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what type I'm after however it's going into a :

Year: 2002
Make: RENAULT
Model: CLIO
Colour: Silver
Submodel: SPORT RS 2.0 3DR M P

VIN: VF1CB150G27369342

@kiwi

Sure some of the breakers here would be up for packaging it if you arrange your own courier.

@Kelv might have one..

Just buy from a tested car from a trustworthy seller. Or potentially have the gearbox rebuilt and then sent on to you. :)

Youll need to see if your exsisting box has a spedo drive on it or not.
Or they have the code stamped on the underside.

Thanks @CJM.
According to the guy who has the gear box out of the car, it doesn't have a spedo. he sent me a picture of the code on it which I have attached but it appears to read - JCS 130 C 002725

Yep, so a Ph2 172/ 182 gearbox it is then.

Expect to pay £150 for one in OK condition, then £250 if you want it rebuilt by Agency Transmissions. Worth contacting him, to see if he would palletise after the build and have it ready to ship..

Awesome guys, thanks so much for all the assistance and responses. great community. I think I'm sorted now, can't wait to get it back on the road now!
