I had loads of play in my gearbox on my 172 cup, and when dropping out the revs in 2nd i would get a clunk, i replaced the dog bone mount for a ktr uprated one and the gearbox is sweet now lots tighter and no clunk in 2nd gear anymore, so if your prob is similar the bushes in the dog bone mount...
