How do I get the wipers to stay up in a central position so I can tuck some cardboard under them to stop the screen frosting over?

Really?? Seat altea's/toledo's you can't do it. The wipes hide up the side of the screen so even when you turn the ignition off, they still go back to the park position.

Yeah in the front lol that's where the windscreen is usually found

they are visible but nothing like the ones on the rear screen. They're really small gauge wire that you focus past so you don't really notice them

If your really looking for them you can see them. They're really tiny squiggly lines about 3-4mm apart going down the screen not noticeable at all really. Couple that with a button that knocks air con and max blowers on and its literally 30 seconds (in this weather, longer if there's proper ice on there) and you sweep with the wiper once and its clear as day

james - they're on other cars too but not mass market. Mainly because Europe don't have such damp weather as us so European car manufacturers don't see the point

My friend did this, except he didn't get a frost it rained instead, and all the water traveled through the sheet into the car and filled his footwell with water, which is were is ECU was, killing the car.

My recommendation... Don't shut a sheet in your door.

Hahaha these conversations have been cracking me up, and yeah I'm quite surprised people haven't heard of the quick clear windscreen, I do like a ford but I wish they didn't hold copyright on it!

My Ford Escort had a heated front screen back in 1989 and it was standard equipment ! Don't know about the newer Fords but mine used to take an eternity to clear the front screen of solid ice , it was fine for a light frost and excellent at de-misting the interior side of the glass though. I had fitted an auto-start alarm too so I just hit the button 5 mins before I set off to work and the car was clear and toasty-warm !
It's rather sad that a quarter of a century later , we are stood outside with ice-scrapers and numb fingers !
De-icer is a horrible chemical and shouldn't be used (bad for wipers , glass and paintwork)
Ice scrapers do scratch your windscreen , a credit card is much kinder
I've poured hot water on my windscreen for years and never cracked one (it is safety glass!) Boil the kettle and add a cup of cold water , however , below -3oc , the water will just re-freeze almost immediately ... also remember that rubbers (window seals) do not like these temperature changes and it will cause them to go grey and deteriorate much more quickly than usual

If you have a phase 2 172 or a 182 , then you will have to consult your handbook at the auto-lights/auto-wipers section ... if you have auto-wipers "ON" , they will return to their original position regardless of whether you pull the ignition key at the top of the stroke , however , if they are "OFF" , the wipers will stop wherever they are when the ignition is turned off !

Hot water freezes quicker than cold water. Cold or teped water is still warmer than ice so your better off using that than boiling a kettle.

Break open the box, put on the screen shiny side up.

Lasts ages and doesn't go soggy - also makes it looks like the car is owned by a gyppo so good when parking in dodgy areas.

Sounds like it only happens under certain conditions, not all the time.

And hot water will still have more energy than cold water so will still melt more ice, even if it does ultimately end up re-freezing faster than cold water would have.

But in reality cold water normally has more than enough energy to melt the ice of a car windscreen for long enough to use the wipers to clear it.

Hadn't realised the certain conditions part of the phenomenon. I do know it has an effect on windscreens though as when using hot water on mine in the past it has re frozen so quickly that I couldn't get the wipers on in time ! Haven't had that problem to such a pronounced degree as when using cold water.
