Re: Mk1 Hybrid Project

Cool - where did you get one from/how much?

Mine started leaking while it was at TDF so Matt sorted one for me. Think he has a contact at Mocal. If you contact Mocal direct they will be able to provide one for you, dont think they cost much (ie a couple of quid)

mk1 oil pressure sender dont like engine vibrations, its better to use a short hose to connect it!

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Got a pic with it all back together inc bonnet ect

How much more oil does it take now ?? Not much more I suppose

Why is it screwed into the back of the block as standard then? lol

k tek sell the ideal part that i used ;) Pirtek are expensive :) Ill Post a photo

They can be had cheap from RD/Merlin too, problem is I could never find one with two M14 female threads, it was always one 1/8NPT and one M14... I got another one to fit this sender today that is 1/8

Because its getting damaged there!?

Connect it directly to the block, run the car for 1 year (as a daily car is used)
and be suprised why oil pressure getting less. --> change oil pressure sender
(in germany ~70€) and the pressure is up again.

the only problem is, that when you think its the sender again it is maybe the pump!

i have destroyed 4 sender, the last new one i bought ist connected by a short
hose and working for ~2 years fine now.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Im thinking i may have to bite the bullet and get an oil cooler, as well as sorting a bigger rad, as when i come off a stage both water temp and oil temp needles are in the red, they stay at a reasonable level through out a 100 mile road rally, but stages it gets hot hot!

...but I had a standard Valver with the original factory oil pressure sender on it - was 15 years old at the time and worked perfectly, showing normal cold and warm idle and the same with driving...... Either way it does not matter as the gauge/sensor Im going to use are aftermarket.

Yeah - Ive never really needed one as its taken stick for a long time on many trackdays, with cheap oil that does not get changed. It took over 40 minutes in one session at Oulton Park and showed nothing out of the ordinary running wise. But for the price I paid, I decided to take it and put it on anyway.... F7s run a lot hotter than the F4's though!

Oh, and if anyone has any ideas about this - http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?535663-Coolant-Problems-High-Temp-Rises-Quickly - It would be appreciated!

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

i am taking the reading of the oil from the sump, its the only place i can thing on the F4 were to get it from! and its reading 108degree after a good session on track.... unsure if thats a false reading be intrested too see the results

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

my 18 year old mk1 pressure sensor is still fine? been bolted to the block all it's life

the only common fault with them is the spade connector tbh

standard oil temp measurement is done in the track.... normal figures are about 95-105deg c

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Yeah, well im only putting an oil pressure gauge on for the time being - im not too bothered about temps as its been fine until now without a cooler, so with a cooler I dont think its ever going to get too hot..

Im just going to T-piece the pressure sender off the front of the block like I did last time and all should be well...

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Did a road rally last night and temps were good after another new header tank and a total coolant flush, but def thinking i should have gone for an f4 over the f7, but the new owner when its sold can worry about that :)

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Well...........

After swapping the starter motor a week ago for one I got from 172Ben, the car was starting a lot better. Really quick turn over compared to before so all was good. Well until today, and its back doing its stupid non starting on the key. Turn to position 3 and nothing, completely dead. I really really dont understand how, as nothings changed for a week - over that time its been perfect, even up until 11pm last night. Oh, and not to mention the coolant problem has got worse even after fitting a brand new sensor and bleeding the whole thing again..

Meh.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Thanks for the comment.

I have replaced the spark plugs with some new NGK PFR6E-10's also now, seems to run a bit smoother. I have been running cheapy Bosch plugs for the past 18 months (without a single issue) but decided to change to see if it made any difference to the coolant problem. I thought it had at first as the gauge was acting 100% normally, but a few days later it went up to the top once or twice. I have a feeling its possibly the clocks, so got a spare set to try sometime - I'm quite confident its not actually over-heating now and its either an air-lock or clocks issue.

Tidied up a few other loose bits including replacing the exhaust down pipe gasket and resealing all the joints. Not much left to do now - just got the TDF Rolling Road day on the 23rd and Anglesey on the 30th, then that's it for the year :)

Jord, im being lazy and should read back thru the thread to find out, but where did you get your polycarb windows from?

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Got them 2nd hand from the Mk1 forum, but they were originally from Plastics4Performance :)

Ahh right. Cheers! Seems as though they are the main source for them. On my 'to do' list.

you sort the cooling issue yet?

^^

Wheres this TDF Rolling road day Jord?

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Lol, nah. Only thing left to try is swap the clocks really, some days (like today) its 100% fine, drive it as hard as you want and itl never go up, basically just normal how its always been. Then other days it can be off the gauge within 5 mins of driving... Given up swapping things as ive changed everything, we'l see when I get round to checking clocks

^^

Two hundred and forty four pages long!

now thats a progression thread. Someone should inform lynden of this....

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Im not bothered TBH, it still drives n that, just makes some funky noises.

RR day this weekend, Anglesey weekend after. Then its getting put away for winter!

As in a trackday! Did you sort out AA/RAC over which would take you back home if it goes pop?

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

lols your Zimmer got a toe bar? If so, Gimme the keys when you go anglesey and i will toe it back! :)

haha. Ive f*cked RAC/AA off now, useless. Ive got seperate recovery cover now which will bring me back regardless, so im not worried!

No it hasnt lol, and it wouldnt be powerful enough to tow it probably! Tow it back with your toe? lol

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Went down to the Rolling Road day at Tour-De-Force yesterday to finally see what figures the car was producing. It ended up making 172.4bhp and 165.0lb/ft. Really pleased with the torque figure, and how it holds pretty much 170bhp from 6000rpm all the way to the limiter without trailing off.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

cracking results that. isn't almost the same as what whiteley run last year at rs tuning.

did adam run?

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

shame you no longer have rstuner, could log the coolant temp and see if it's the gauge or not

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Mine was 172.0bhp and 162lbft last year at RS Tuning, and from what I've seen, both TDF and RST's rollers are near identical. So yeah, pretty much the same. Wonder what mine would do with GroupN map.

Yeah - 167.5bhp 150.2lb/ft

Its been fine for a while (touches wood). Ever since I had all the coolant system drained again last week and replaced the gearbox-to-chassis earth..

Probably a b00st in torque and a change to the shape of the graph..

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Yeah - 167.5bhp 150.2lb/ft

thats good, cos wasn't he worried about the health of the engine

i really should get mine done and see how it performs

also what causes the torque to tail off so much?

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Not entirely sure, but I'd probably guess its down to the design of the engine/exhaust manifold/inlet.

Adams was OK, but it was thought he was down on a fair bit of torque - probably down to the bottom end/piston rings which we thought anyway due to the amount of oil it uses. 2min30 onwards in this video gives a good demonstration lol.
