Selling a car (privately) has to be one of the biggest PITA going!

Good luck with the sale mate.

Good luck, everycar I've ever sold first viewer has bought it on the spot. I reckon those wheels are putting people off!

A mate of a mate is selling a 172. Standard, and he is having no luck shifting it either, so although the wheels may be a put off, I don't think thats the only reason its not selling.

Mine might be up for sale soon :( Market does appear slow for anything not cheap & economical.

He finishes work at 6.30, so still clutching at straws that he will call around that time.

lol, might just be kidding myself though

Call him, and say you've had someone ring up asking if they can view and you told them you'd get back to them so is he having it or not.

If he's that keen, he would have gone to the nearest cashpoint. Even if it's £20, a deposit's a deposit.

Put yourself in his shoes.. If he wanted it, he'd have either said at the time or called you so far today.

It's not like he's buying a dishwasher. Buying cars is more fun and exciting, not what you put off until the end of the day.

Get some standard wheels. It's only going to sell for peanuts until you do.

You honestly think that a set of aftermarket wheels are gonna result in it selling for peanuts?

Yes its not the wheels its the image it gives, if i was looking for one and i saw one with aftermarked wheels i would skip to the next ad.

  330i. E30 Touring.
Oh feck, I;ve just seen 'em.

Get some standards on there asap and it'll sell much quicker!

How many people need to tell you the wheels are holding it back before you listen?

Click. Awful wheels. Back. Click another.

If you read back my posts, and look at my wanted threads, maybe you'll see I am listening to everyone.

  Shhh
Dont worry, its not 6-30pm yet.

He might be having cold feet over the car, and had no guts to tell you at the time he was kinda interested. Ive felt that way, now i tell them ill think about it.

Dont ring him tonight, but ring him tomorrow afternoon/evening expressing that you want to list it on autotrader/eBay etc and wanted to know if he was still interested.

If he spots your number, he would probably ignore it.

I feel for ya mate... My 106 GTI was an absolute nightmare to shift a few years back... and that was minty mint, silly low mileage and very subtley modified... was up at top whack and the amount of timewasters I had was unreal... the first person to actually come and view it bought it though.

As said, Malky is trying to get std wheels! It's not the wheels that are that bad, it's the fact that they portray the wrong image, and as I've said previously, yours looks like a minter, with low mileage and one of the last plates to be put on a 172... so if it was std it would appeal to the more "enthusiast buyer" who will pay an extra few hundred quid for a decent one.

Thanks mate. Its actually nice to see a constructive comment rather than 'yer wheels are shite mate'

I personally wouldn't worry about the wheels. Its better to have a mickey set of wheels and good rubber than a standard set of wheels and nearly bald budgets.

But in terms of a sale, its not sold until its paid for. If he wanted it, he'd have left a deposit on it like any other normal person would do.

No worries. As people are saying... "enthusiasts will just look past your advert as soon as they see the wheels"...

Another thing to add... They'll see the wheels and just think a "boy racer" has owned it... it's one thing to drive a car hard but with 'mechanical sympathy' and driving it like you stole it at cruises which unfortuantely the wheels do shout that.

I'll shut up about the wheels now though as I know you're trying to get std wheels!

May be worth speaking to cliospares as I sold him my old Cup on std 172 wheels a few months back, he may still have them.

I have sold cars in the past with no deposit, so I honestly didn't really think to insist on one. Lesson learned now though lol. No deposit, no sale. simples

Still mighty pissed off though. Had planned a slap up dinner with the wife at the weekend since I would have had a bit of extra cash under me.

Beans on toast it is.

lol, at my age, I'd love to be called a boy racer again. Now its, 'aww, daddy is driving his kids Clio. How sweet'

I wouldn't bother with deposits... If someone wants it they'll take it or come back / call you back.

I know a women who left deposits on 8 different wedding dresses... she only bought 1 so deposits mean s**t imo. lol.

Unlucky mate, chin up.

As for the wheels, i'm the same looking at any car. If it doesn't have the original wheels i'm not intersted.

Sadly this is fact these days.

That's why when people put different wheels on cars you think it looked better standard in mosts cases.

The deposit is a sign of intent, talk is cheap. First person who puts something down (even £20) is serious. If you were the buyer, would you give a deposit on something you weren't sure about? No? You is a timewaster. Simples.

Edd - im guessing you spent about the same amount of time doing your old car exactly about this time last year!! Is this some summer ritual????!!!!!

  Clio 172
Dont want to hijack the thread but with all the talk of standard wheels and how they are near a necessity when selling your motor.

What would most think if the car had standard wheels but are refurbed and painted a different colour?

If I was the buyer I wouldn't go to veiw a car being sold privately without all the money in my pocket and the seller to be in a position to give me the keys there and then. I could put a deposit down today, tomorrow he takes it to tescos and it gets keyed????

Through a dealer, yes i've put deposits down. Privately... No chance.
