Re: Mk1 F4R'd Track Car Project [2010 Winter Rebuild]

Still needs a new clutch though unfortunately!

Hopefully it will last Rockingham in June and Cadwell at the start of July, might have time to replace it then I hope

Re: Mk1 F4R'd Track Car Project [2010 Winter Rebuild]

Righty then - driveshafts finally sorted.

As mentioned a few pages back I have always had problems with the hub nut thread on the N/S driveshaft, i.e. the nut not going on. I got a scrap driveshaft from Whiteley and attmpted to swap the whole outer CV over. I couldnt get the CV off the end so gave up and tried to repair the thread on the original shaft.

After a few hours with files, grinders and new nuts I finally got it sorted - threads perfectly now thankfully.

My next problem was the inner O/S driveshaft gaiter. It had split when we towed the car to get the welding finished - and seemed to have a really hard time trying to get hold of a replacement! No factors could match it, the only option was Renault and it was going to be silly money compared to the price of an outer CV gaiter. Luckily sideways danny has a spare kit that he had never used, so got that from him and went about fitting it...

Old one cut off...

Tripid off, new gaiter on...

IMG_0410.jpg

Then after yet more hassle with the inner clip, done!
IMG_0416.jpg

IMG_0417.jpg

I ended up having to use a jubilee clip to secure the smaller one, as it split in half when it was crimped - good 'ole Renault quality. Outer one crimped perfectly and then fitted it back to the car.

Hopefully I will never have to do another gaiter/cv joint - messiest f*cking job ever. The N/S driveshaft that I had lent had a split in it that we didn't know about - and when I came to swap it back for mine there was grease everywhere. Just cleaning the grease up took 3x longer than acctually swapping the driveshaft - f*cking joke!

More soon.

I know what you mean about that CV grease, I have no idea how people can rebuild them for a living. Glad you got it sorted, I was starting to worry.

it is horrible stuff, got two to do over the weekend not I'm looking forward to it.

will that shaft be all right with a jubilee clip on, will it not affect the balance of it. also is that the only way to change that side boot, would a cv cone not be upto the job

Done about 100 miles since fitting and it drives spot on, its not come off yet either lol!

amazing. Hats off mate - you have some skills

Re: Mk1 F4R'd Track Car Project [2010 Winter Rebuild]

Cheers for the comment!

After driving the car with the shafts changed, a knocking had started from the N/S front. It was more of a hollow knocking noise rather than a clunk - but I thought yeah its possibly a ball joint.

Checked EVERYTHING - Ball Joint and the Pinch Bolt, Hub Nut, Track Rod End, Hub Nuts, Wishbone Bolts, Anti Roll Bar, Subframe Mounts. Also, when jacked up there is no play in the wheel no matter how hard you pull it, all feels perfect just like the O/S.

The only play I can find is the driveshaft (in and out), and the noise sounds VERY similar as the one when driving. Wierd thing is too, its only when going in a straight line - over humps and bumps in the road. Dont get it on corners...

The noise sounds very similar to the driveshaft when pulling it by hand - but I thought movement in the driveshaft was normal? There is physically nothing else it could be, everythings tight and there is no play anywhere when jacked up!

Anyone have any ideas?

that looks normal to me... Not sure on the noise though?!!

Going off that video there seems to be abit of excessive play there. Mine drive shaft moves abit but not that much.

I guess dropping the car would be a bad idea?

Jack up.. drop harshly.. see if it makes a noise?

Yeah, no movement anywhere apart from the driveshaft if sat still and just jacked up!

that looks normal to me... Not sure on the noise though?!!

Yeah, I thought there should be a bit, but usually no noise like its making (clunk clunk when going in and out)...

Its getting worse when driving - certainly does sound like a balljoint is loose or something - but I know everythings tight and I even swapped the balljoint itself. Has to be the driveshaft I think :(

Re: Mk1 F4R'd Track Car Project [2010 Winter Rebuild]

Does it click when you have full lock on? Go to a car park and do a full lock circle either way and see of you can hear a click. You should have driveshaft plunge or the shaft would bottom out when the suspension goes into bump but it definately shouldnt be making ANY kind of clunk, lol.

Re: Mk1 F4R'd Track Car Project [2010 Winter Rebuild]

...so if it clicks/clunks on full lock from that side = the shaft is f*cked im guessing? lol

Re: Mk1 F4R'd Track Car Project [2010 Winter Rebuild]

Yeah, outer CV! Inner CV is a tri-lobe so will move in and out of the box as its supposed too, a clunk like you have is pretty much definately going to be either outer CV fucked or your hub nut isn't tight enough!

Re: Mk1 F4R'd Track Car Project [2010 Winter Rebuild]

Hub nuts @ 280Nm, lol. Brand new bearing too!

Only just swapped the f*cking shaft back to my own and knowing my luck it will be knackered now. Will try full lock in a bit

Re: Mk1 F4R'd Track Car Project [2010 Winter Rebuild]

280? Lol, is that what Renault say?? Sounds f**king high!

Yeah, full lock in circles slowly. If you cant hear anything from that, put a tiny bit of lock on, rest your foot on the brake and put it under load in 1st.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Yeah, found the value on here!

TBF I usually just do them tight tight and never had a problem, then found the value on here and it was just like 1/10th of a turn more if that until the torque wrench clicked...just so I knew it was tight and not that causing the problem!

When you pull/push the shaft its only the actual shaft itself that moves, like in and out of the outer CV - accompanied by a clicking/clunking..

Il try some full lock action and see what happens

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

If its moving in and out of the Outer CV, that's going to be your problem, lol.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Yeah, but there should be *some* movement - correct? Or do you mean movement as in the CV should be solid and the movement should come from the gearbox end? lol

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Movement should be gearbox end with a tri-lobe joint! Outer CV just needs to articulate to accomodate for turning and bump/rebound changes in the geometry.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Yeah....so its gotta be the CV thats fucked then, good 10mm of movement in the shaft going in and out of it! FFS.

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Great work f0xy. Realised I've never posted in your thread but always reading your updates. Top work :)

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

Cheers!

Well the knockings got worse :( - new CV or Shaft time I think!

For the amount of work you put into this car, you don't seem to have much luck do you?!

Re: Mk1 F4R/172'd Track Car Project

like mini was saying Jord, it sounds like your outer CV. Mine went on the saco and it did exactly that.... got worse and worse.
when you apply throttle and there is load put onto the joint it knocks.... the more you put on it the more it knocks its tits off. Let off throttle and its fine.
you should just be able to replace the CV. mine was whole new fuckin shaft!
