My Brother - Video Games Artist

Now, i wouldn't normally post anything up about my family, by i'm actually in awe of some of the things my bro has been up to lately, so i thought id share in this section. He's a lead environment artist at TTFusion (Warner Brothers) and has created the following real time environment in his spare time whilst learning how to use Cryengine 3 - the engine behind Ryse: Son of Rome, one of the Xbox One launch games.

Might not be that cool for techie/gamer types i suppose, but as a man who spends all day playing with a calculator, i think its incredible

And finally, something he's been doing at work ...

That's insane! I cannot even begin to imagine the skill needed for that kind of stuff!

Cheers for the the comments guys, hopefully some of you have played some of his games over the past few years!!!

Not bad at all! :D I used to work with a couple of the tech / rendering guys who are at TT. No shame in being proud of your brother. :)

Are in a similar field of expertise then Andy? I must admit, i laughed at him when he said he was going to do a degree in computer game design, then i almost fell of my chair at him doing a masters, thinking he was just wanting to extent his laziness for another year ... how wrong could i be

Should have guessed his potential when he designed/uploaded a level for Call of Duty on the PC at 16 (2003) i suppose ...

I R confused @Sir_Dave. Have brother who can do work of such quality, yet is somehow related to you. I'm sorry I'm calling custard ;) x

lol, cheeky feck. I got the brains, he got the artistic ability ;)

Aye - the signs were there early on mate! LOL! Definitely a talent that needs to be encouraged and proud of. :D

Am I in a similar field of expertise? Yes and no, mate. :) But as a code monkey rather than an artist (although I also have graphic design qualifications).

Yes in that I spent a good 12 years or so working for various games developers as a graphics and rendering programmer; spending most of my time working on the underlying technology and visual effects rather than specific titles. In the end I think I worked on around 13-14 published titles.

No in that I left the industry due to the long hours, s**t pay and being made redundant for the umpteenth time! However, I still work on the same sort of thing; i.e. graphics, rendering and visualisations programmer but for a defence company and for R&D purposes. I still get to play with modern hardware, write 3D software, and implement the same sort of technology used in modern games so I'm happy in that respect. :) My immediate colleagues / team in work are also ex-game industry so we work together extremely well.

I still think about 'going back' into the games industry at times but... well... I am too comfy with the benefits of NOT being in it I guess!

I look forward to seeing more of his work and/or playing games he's contributed on. Awesome sauce!

Really, really nice work :D From the high poly modelling and normal map generation, right through to the artistic direction and framing / storyboarding. Love it :)

The more I see of the CryEngine the more I'm tempted to apply for a job at one of their studios! Coupled with a decent artist the results can be stunning (as evidenced by Matt's work).

Cheers for the nice comments people, proud older brother!! Such a cool job though, sooo jealous.

@SharkyUK no idea what your 1st sentence meant lol

Im sure there are plenty of jobs going at TT, loads of them moved over to Foundry42 iirc.

LOL! Let's just say his work is impressive! :D

I've made enquiries up at TT but I hit a similar problem to a lot of other companies I've approached; i.e. they are extremely interested in what I can do due to my skillset and prior experience... but they can't match the pay and benefits I currently enjoy in my present position. Realistically I would be looking at a 30% pay cut with fewer benefits and, as I get older, those things are too important to overlook. Hence, I just look at the exciting stuff dev's are producing (such as your brother) and moan and whinge about it instead. And preach to everyone who will listen just how good the 'good old days' actually were... :p

Your brother did that? That was show cased in the engine demonstration recently. I saw the pictures some time ago and posted them. Very good work.

Yup, he's Trevelyan on those forums! Are you into CRYENGINE stuff as well then?

He did mention about it being in their demonstration video the other day actually, although i think i was more impressed by the fact that the whole Star Citizen game (what he's working on now) is being crowd funded - £42 million or something raised so far :S He's never one to shout about these things though, so never actually tells me what he's up to - i have to trawl his facebook to find out what's going on!

Sharky - true, true, im older & more interested in the money, he's still young/single/care-free hence being more interested in the work. He'll learn lol. (or perhaps i will)

Not specifically Cryengine just follow the industry in general but was very impressed by your brothers rendering when I saw it initially. Posted it in one of Sharkys threads earlier in the year :)

Yeah, you have to wonder if we're the ones who have got it all wrong! Oh well, good luck to him I say! :)

Looks good. I take it she's looking to get into the games industry or a similar field?
@Silent_Scone is into CryEngine because he's a graphics wh**e and one of only about 3 people capable of running the engine at maximum detail settings / resolution at interactive frame rates on his home PC... :p And no, I'm not jealous. No siree. Not one bit.

EDIT: Sir_Dave, any links to more of Matt's work?

Yea, she wants to get into the scenery design side of it, after posting that earlier i looked up some of her more recent work, i thought her original bioshock inspired piece was good, but her later stuff has come on leaps and bounds.
