Can you put too much grease in CV?

    Hi,

after a big winter rebuild, I did my first track day at Anglesey a few weeks ago. I've just come to give the car a once over before Donnington Park next week to find that all three of the cv boots have either got holes in or have blown their clips off. What's makes it worse is they were all new cv boots and clips.

The only thing that comes to mind is that I put plenty of grease in the cv boots before closing up the boots but now I'm thinking whether I have over done it. Does anyone know if there is indeed a limit t how much grease you should put in a cv boot and if there is, is it because this can happen?

Any help would be appreciated just so I can see what I did wrong so it doesn't happen again next week

Yes you can and for exactly what you describe. Average joint takes 100-120g as a mass generalisation.

yupp correct, as tony would say, too much grease can caulse the boot to fail when the grease gets hot

Re: Can you put too much grease in CV?

I'm sorry to restart this thread but I have replaced all my cv boots a few weeks ago and after listening to people above I made sure that I didn't put too much grease in the boots and only used the grease supplied in the sachets. Unfortunately at the end of the very next track day I noticed they had all gone again.

Now i'm totally baffled and a bit annoyed I have to swap them over again . I just wondered whether anyone knew any other reason why cv boots can explode other than putting too much grease in? I would prefer to work it out now what I'm doing wrong before I swap the boots again this weekend

The only thing I'm thinking is whether I wiped enough grease out of the joint before I put the new stuff in but I think I got rid of the worst of it, or are you supposed to totally wash them clean?

any help that stops me having to buy new cv boots after each track day would be much appreciated

Your actually bursting the boots everytime or just the clips are coming loose.

that only applys to full driveshaft assemblies. A boot is a boot as long as it fits and doesn't split instantly.

Are you using proper metal clips, or cable ties?

Are you sure? I was told the generic one I bought wouldn't fit and I needed to buy a genuine Renault one. Which was over 30.

The generic ones do work. It's the shafts that don't.

    metal clips

The only thing I can think of to totally wash out the cv joint of grease next time and put the sachet in there.

Re: Can you put too much grease in CV?

No need to wash them out, your either putting the clips far too tight and splitting the boot, fitting the boots to tight together so the ribs are rubbing together or the boots themselves are just the worst chinese rubbish.

Are you brakes binding too? I have melted cv boots off before when I have had the disks glowing red.

Re: Can you put too much grease in CV?

The CV boots are Lucas so they aren't cheap crap.

I have actually just found that one of my breaks is binding but I don't get the impression that they are melting because of the appearance of the boots however your point about the boots being to tight so the ribs are rubbing could be a great shout!

I'll see whether I can stretch them along a bit on the driveshaft.

I've never had much success with the rubber multi fit ones personally. The proper sized plastic ones are much better imo.
