Exhaust louder after belt change
Evening folks. I have a 2002 ph2 172. Had it in for both belt kits, dephaser and waterpump replacement last week at a very well recomended specialist. On my way home from the garage i noticed the exhaust seemed louder. Alot louder when you put the foot down. I got it home. Jacked it up and had a look for a leak in the exhaust. No leaks so i left it for the night.
Next day everything seems fine. I thought then it must of been my imagination. Driven the car 3 times since and everything seems fine until today. I drove the car for the first time in 2 days today. Idles fine. Exhaust isnt loud when idling. Exhaust isnt even that loud at cruising speed but when i put the foot down there is a loud roar from the engine bay. There is no loss in power. If anything there is a slight increase in power since having the belts done.
Did a little search online. Most threads indicate timing not being done correctly but i thought the car would be lacking in power if that was the case.
I know how crucial it is to have all this work done correctly so its starting to worry me now

Re: Exhaust louder after belt change
Forgot to mention. Theres more vibration in the pedals than normal. I think. Could be my imagination

Well iv just had the car out for a wee drive and there is defo alot of vibration coming through the pedals and floor of the car. When putting the foot down there is a loud roar from the engine bay. I would say that performance is slightly lagging at low rpm. As soon as it hits about 4000rpm the car starts to pull properly. Iv read lots about people having the exact same issue after a belt change but no real definitive answer anywhere. Think ill have to get it back to SWR as something is defo not right.

Re: Exhaust louder after belt change
Surely your best bet is to phone up or go back to the specialist?

Re: Exhaust louder after belt change
Probably something loose like a bolt or bracket, just get it back to them and see what they say.

Im not sure. Its weird. It was fine for a few days and car was running awesome. Now the noise is back iv noticed it doesnt pull in low revs. Only when the rpm is hitting about 4k will it start to respond. Earlier when I posted I didnt notice this as I was driving on motorway at 70mph and it was pulling fine coz the revs were high.

Re: Exhaust louder after belt change
soulds like you have an exhuast manifold problem, it could be that this is casuing the lambda to read the wrong values at lover revs, thus the car seem underpowered. Would also explain why the car sounds louder.

What sort of manifold problem? Its defo not leaking. Thanks for your reply btw

Re: Exhaust louder after belt change
hmm, have you checked its not leaking from the flexi bit? If its not leakign, then its not the manifold. I suppose if the valves are opening at the wrong time (slightly to early or late), then it could affect the sound emitted from the engine... best take it back and get them to check it.
