Thumbs up Brake fluid...talk to me

Right, I originally had in my mind that I would be ordering this:

    http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-893-motu...synthetic.aspx

But after more looking around, I get the impression that for a 1*2, DOT4 fluid is recommended.

Is this correct? Or will anything do? Car will mainly be used on track. Got everything else pretty much sorted out apart from this.

    Thanks

DOT4 and DOT5.1 spec fluids are interchangeable so either will be ok to use. Dot 5.1 is a higher specification regarding dry and wet (containing 3.7% water) boiling points.

In theory, a DOT5.1 will be better. But bear in mind that, as with any standardised specifications, manufacturers can make a product that does the numbers and still make a poorer overall product. A quality racing DOT4 may not be rated to the top dry boiling point but more stable under repeated heating/cooling cycles in use.

... I'm not going to suggest a product as there are more experienced / racers on here who will do that with more knowledge

Exactly this - same as the WRC teams use, higher boiling point than 5.1

Castrol dot 4 stuff I've used last 5 years in mine. Never had any problems and car is used regularly on track. ATE super blue comes highly rated aswel.

Remember that dot 5.1 will need to be changed once a year atleast due to water absorbsion. Personally wouldnt bother with dot5.1 stuff unless you use your car for motorsport.

Wicked thanks, how much is needed again. 1L more than enough? Or shall I just get two. Assuming it can be stored and wont degrade.

I see this recommendation a lot in Europe and the US. What is the main appeal, price to performance? It is relatively expensive here in Aust, and lower spec than RBF600.

I got 1L when I did mine and had some left over (Full bleed on all the lines)

And I think it's "bad practice" to store an opened can of brake fluid, moisture contamination and all.

Oh and another +1 for ATE Superblue

Same as all brake fluids! Unless you're thinking of silicone-based DOT 5? Dot 5.1 was developed over DOT4 for modern ABS brakes (althoug DOT 4 works with abs braked cars also) it just has a slightly lower viscosity and has higher basic spec temp ratings.

I got DOT 5.1 at around £2.50/500ml from EuroCarparts recently.
