Re: New Tomb Raider
I loved the very first two, I was addicted to them but I'm not sure about this one. I liked the loneliness and emptiness of them. TR2 was my favourite game ever.
The first one was out 16 years ago, can you believe it?
Yes it looks great but like Toypop says, it's kind of lost the ethos of what Tomb Raider was meant to be about. It also seems very dark, I can hardly see anything!!

Re: New Tomb Raider
Having watched more videos I have to change my tune on this.
I think with today's production costs the type of Tomb Raider we liked doesn't appeal to a large enough audience to be profitable these days.
So this new game is NOT Tomb Raider, it has the name but that is where the similarity ends.
It looks like something else. Kind of cross between Uncharted, Assassins Creed and Max Payne.
So if I forget the name of the game and just think of it as a new third person action game with a female lead character that steals elements from those other three titles then yeah based on those videos I am wetting my pants over this.
I also like the change in the depiction of Lara Croft versus the previous titles. The old version was a plastic 14 year olds wet dream with no personality - a dated remnant from the 90's "mascot" age of gaming. The new one appears to have a character, be more vulnerable and feel pain so that gets a thumbs up from me as being able to have some sort of empathy for a character is what motivates me to continue the story rather than quit and play something else.

Re: New Tomb Raider
Agree more puzzle solving exploration type play would be good but as said it doesn't appeal to enough people.

Re: New Tomb Raider
Meh looks alright. I'd rather them release 1-3 in HD like they did with MGS and Silent Hill. I know they released Anniversary but it was abit crap.

Funnily enough I was thinking of getting Anniversary on Steam or maybe used on 360 just for a laugh given that I loved the original.
What is crap about it? My brother said the graphics were not particularly amazing but had been improved -I mean it is at least as good as a HD collection would be?
He said they have also removed the grid based movement system and said there are some similarities with Assassins Creed now in terms of character control? Certainly youtube videos make the movement look more like AC.
So I am curious as to what you didn't like about it, you could save me a few bob as I don't want to waste my money on a dud.

I wish I could give you a simple answer as to why I didn't like it but I really can't!
I think I enjoyed the first one so much that I built up this hype it was going to be as good as the original and I guess it just didn't deliver. The graphics have had a massive boost from the original I'd say on par with the HD collection updates and the control is much more free as Legend/Underworld but the game just seemed boring to me and I ended up selling it before I completed it.
Hope this gives you an insight...

Re: New Tomb Raider
Did you like Underworld? I heard the combat was a dog but my brother told me that the camera made it virtually unplayable? Yet on youtube it looks pretty awesome and I was thinking about getting it as it follows on from the story in the original?
I am guessing Anniversary will never be as good as the original felt at the time. I remember everyone was hyping up Mario 64 for being a true 3D platform game yet in the UK at least Tomb Raider came out before it and in my controversial opinion was the better game... I had an imported N64 but still Tomb Raider blew my mind as it was such a huge leap over anything else I had played.
Take away the amazement of not having seen anything like it before and maybe what remains wasn't that great?

The original Tomb Raider was mind blowingly good at the time. Awesome memories as a kid playing it, nothing else had come close.

Re: New Tomb Raider
played underworld earlier. Didn't like it, and Ioved the originals.
might have had something to do with playing uncharted today too which I have found awesome.

Re: New Tomb Raider
Really? I quite liked Underworld. It loses focus about half way though, and I did lose interest. But IMO it's better than Legends. A lot of the recent ones have been tripe really, I only entertain them for nostalgia more than anything else as remember the original so well from yoooooth.
This one does look promising

Re: New Tomb Raider
I'd like to see more actual game play footage from the new Tombraider. Looks good in the clips but want to see more how it actually works.

Re: New Tomb Raider
I thought Lara looked at her best in underworld. Not impressed with the visuals on this one so far and she doesn't seem 'sexy' at all to me now, which was a major point of Lara. I hope they get better before release date.

Re: New Tomb Raider
two weeks to go.
Was going to trade some games in for this but it's only £32 from The Hut, plus 10% off with code SHOOTER10 and I can get 3% cashback via topcashback. Will be pre-ordering tonight me thinks!

Re: New Tomb Raider
Looks quite good this - think the game it most closely resembles is Far Cry 3 with a hint of Unchartered.

I believe this has now expired? I just pre-ordered from Grainger Games for £29.99

Re: New Tomb Raider
Today was last day. Worked for me although they now seem to have out the base price up to £35

Re: New Tomb Raider
Her screams in the trailers when she's falling and stuff are really annoying!

Re: New Tomb Raider
This game has been scoring 9's and 8's and I have been pretty hyped about it for a while now.
I stand by what I said in a previous post - I am not looking or expecting to re-live the original Tomb Raider and everything I liked about that game. I've come to accept the market for that type of title ain't big enough to justify a AAA release so instead we get an Uncharted type game with a female lead.
Yeah it ain't the Tomb Raider I want but that doesn't mean it is a game that I don't want. On the contrary I have now pre-ordered and can't wait.
I've seen videos already from where pirate copies are out in the wild and have really had to resist the temptation to watch it and ruin the plot. It looks awesome.
I've ordered on PC via Steam, kind of wish I'd got the collectors on Amazon as I want that figurine.
